Ulysses S. Grant was one of the most successful generals in American history. He led the Union Army to victory in the Civil War, and later served two terms as President of the United States. Early Life and Career

Ulysses S. Grant was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio, on April 27, 1822. His father was a tanner, and his mother was a devout Methodist. Grant attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, and graduated in 1843. He served in the Mexican-American War, and distinguished himself at the Battle of Chapultepec.

Civil War

When the Civil War broke out in 1861, Grant joined the Union Army. He quickly rose through the ranks, and by 1864 he was in command of all Union forces in the West. Grant led the Union Army to victory in a series of important battles, including Vicksburg and Chattanooga. In 1865, he accepted the surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House, effectively ending the war.

Presidency

After the war, Grant was elected President of the United States. He served two terms, from 1869 to 1877. During his presidency, Grant oversaw the Reconstruction of the South, and he also worked to improve the nation's economy and infrastructure. Grant was a popular president, but his legacy was tarnished by a number of scandals, including the Crédit Mobilier scandal.

Later Life and Death

After leaving the White House, Grant traveled around the world. He wrote his memoirs, which were published in 1885. Grant died of throat cancer in 1885. He is buried in New York City.
