The Crew

The crew of the B-29 bomber that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima was made up of 12 men:

  • Colonel Paul Tibbets (pilot)
  • Major Thomas Ferebee (bombardier)
  • Captain Theodore Van Kirk (navigator)
  • Captain William Parsons (weapons officer)
  • Captain Robert Lewis (co-pilot)
  • Staff Sergeant Jacob Beser (tail gunner)
  • Staff Sergeant John Kuharek (radio operator)
  • Staff Sergeant Joe Stiborik (flight engineer)
  • Sergeant George Caron (radar operator)
  • Sergeant Robert Shumard (assistant engineer)
  • Sergeant Richard Nelson (assistant radio operator)
  • Sergeant Wayne Duzenberry (photographer)

These men were all volunteers. They knew that the mission they were undertaking was dangerous, but they believed that it was necessary to end the war. They were also aware of the potential consequences of their actions, but they were determined to carry out their Free Downloads.

The Mission

The mission to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima was planned in great secrecy. The crew of the B-29 bomber was not told what their target was until they were in the air. They were only told that they were going to drop a "special bomb" on a Japanese city.

The crew flew for hours before reaching Hiroshima. When they finally arrived over the city, they were greeted by a thick layer of smoke. The city was already being bombed by conventional weapons, and the crew could see the fires burning below them.

The crew dropped the atomic bomb at 8:15 AM. The bomb exploded with a blinding flash of light and a deafening roar. The crew could feel the heat of the explosion even from their altitude of 30,000 feet.

The Aftermath

The crew of the B-29 bomber flew back to their base in Tinian Island. They were all shaken by what they had seen. They knew that they had killed thousands of people, but they also believed that they had saved many more lives by ending the war.

The crew members went on to live very different lives. Some of them became heroes, while others struggled to cope with the guilt of what they had done. They all had to live with the knowledge that they had played a role in one of the most destructive events in human history.
