Te Reo Maori is the indigenous language of New Zealand. It is a vibrant and beautiful language, and it is spoken by over 150,000 people worldwide.

If you are interested in learning Te Reo Maori, then learning how to count is a great place to start. Te Reo Maori numbers are very similar to English numbers, but there are a few key differences.

This book will teach you everything you need to know about Te Reo Maori counting. You will learn how to count from 1 to 100, and you will also learn how to use Maori numbers in everyday conversation.

Chapter 1: The Basics of Te Reo Maori Counting

In this chapter, you will learn the basics of Te Reo Maori counting. You will learn how to count from 1 to 10, and you will also learn how to pronounce Maori numbers.

The Maori numbers from 1 to 10 are:

  • tahi (one)
  • rua (two)
  • toru (three)
  • wha (four)
  • rima (five)
  • ono (six)
  • whitu (seven)
  • waru (eight)
  • iwa (nine)
  • tekau (ten)

To pronounce Maori numbers, you simply need to say the number and then add the suffix "-a". For example, to say the number one, you would say "tahi-a".

Chapter 2: Counting from 11 to 100

In this chapter, you will learn how to count from 11 to 100. You will learn how to use the Maori words for "ten", "twenty", "thirty", and so on.

The Maori words for the tens are:

  • tekau (ten)
  • rua tekau (twenty)
  • toru tekau (thirty)
  • wha tekau (forty)
  • rima tekau (fifty)
  • ono tekau (sixty)
  • whitu tekau (seventy)
  • waru tekau (eighty)
  • iwa tekau (ninety)

To count from 11 to 19, you simply say the number of tens and then the number of ones. For example, to say the number eleven, you would say "tekau ma tahi".

To count from 20 to 99, you simply say the number of tens and then the number of ones. For example, to say the number twenty-one, you would say "rua tekau ma tahi".

To say the number 100, you simply say "rau".

Chapter 3: Using Maori Numbers in Everyday Conversation

Here are some examples of how to use Maori numbers in everyday conversation:

  • Ka mihi ki a koe! (Hello!)
  • E hia te wa? (What time is it?)
  • Ko toku waea he ... (My phone number is ...)
  • E hia nga moni kei a koe? (How much money do you have?)
