An American Tank Gunner, His Enemy, and the Collision of Lives in World War II
A True Story of Friendship, Humanity, and the Horrors of War
In the midst of the chaos and carnage of World War II, two very different men found themselves on opposite sides of the most destructive conflict in history. One was an American tank gunner named Clarence Smoyer. The other was a German soldier named Hans-Jürgen Massaquoi.
Smoyer was a young man from Pennsylvania who had never been outside of the United States before he was drafted into the Army. Massaquoi was a young man from Liberia who had been living in Germany for several years when the war broke out.
